SAIC Motor surpasses 100 million vehicles backed by IP-driven innovation

ensipa.cn|Updated: June 10, 2026

SAIC Motor delivered its 100 millionth vehicle, an IM LS9 Hyper from IM Motors, on May 28, making it the first Chinese automaker to reach this milestone and highlighting innovation and intellectual property as key drivers.

The milestone reflects China's shift from assembly-based production to an intellectual property (IP)-led auto industry. Millions of patents underpin electric vehicles, intelligent driving systems, and core technologies, enabling domestic brands to scale globally.

Founded in 1955, SAIC evolved from Shanghai Internal Combustion Engine Parts Manufacturing Company into a diversified automotive group. Its portfolio includes Roewe, MG, Maxus, SAIC Volkswagen, SAIC Audi, and IM Motors.

Through sustained research and development, SAIC has accumulated nearly 26,000 patents. Strategic IP investment in electrification, autonomous driving, and connected vehicles has created a robust technology foundation for growth.

CATL drives the EV ecosystem with proprietary lithium-ion battery technologies. Licensing patents globally and supplying automakers, including Tesla, it holds roughly 40 percent of the world's EV battery market, reinforcing China's technological influence.

Chairman Zeng Yuqun highlights innovation in materials, thermal management, and manufacturing processes. Over the past decade, CATL has invested more than 100 billion yuan ($14.76 billion) in R&D and holds over 60,000 patents, sustaining industry-leading patent growth.

XPeng Motors is expanding its footprint into over 60 countries and regions, drawing on its robust intellectual property portfolio, significant investment in research and development, and tailored local operations to drive international growth while showcasing China's advancements in EV technology on the global stage.

BYD leads in patents and technology, with over 42,000 patents and R&D investment of over 250 billion yuan. Its batteries, chips, and hybrid systems strengthen exports and global supply chain competitiveness.
