2025 China Patent Survey Report reveals Chinese firms' gains in patent output and commercialization

The China National Intellectual Property Administration has recently released the 2025 China Patent Survey Report, which reveals the increasing dominance of Chinese companies in patent output and commercialization. Research-and-development-driven invention patents now account for 87.4 percent.

The industrialization rate of invention patents reached 54.0 percent, up 0.7 percentage points from 2024. This steady upward trend is seen across all company sizes, with enterprises having the highest rate at 62.0 percent.

Private enterprises are leading in both R&D investment and patent commercialization, further solidifying their position as key innovators in China. Their continued growth plays a crucial role in strengthening China's innovation capacity.

Patents are a driving force for both upgrading traditional industries and developing emerging sectors. In strategic emerging industries, patent commercialization is 4.7 percentage points higher than the national average, enhancing competitiveness and fueling innovation.

In the future industries sector, 42.5 percent of companies are focusing on patents that explore cutting-edge technologies and align with long-term industry strategies. This forward-looking approach may unlock new sources of economic growth.

Meanwhile, traditional industries like metal products and general equipment manufacturing have exceeded 70 percent in patent industrialization, achieving impressive results in technological advancement and sectoral transformation.

The report highlights how patents are playing a crucial role in transforming China's industries, from traditional sectors to emerging fields, and positioning the country as a leader in innovation-driven economic development.
