The Shanghai Municipal People's Government recently announced the fifth Shanghai Intellectual Property Innovation Awards, honoring organizations and projects excelling in intellectual property (IP) creation, protection, and commercialization. Winners received awards at the 22nd Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum on Oct 18.
The Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, received recognition for an outstanding IP application. The office oversees IP management, technology incubation, transfer activities, academic-industry collaborations, and projects aimed at integrating hospital and industry initiatives.
The office operates with a dual-structure model, merging internal management with external platforms and overseeing concept validation and transfer services. This setup enhances institutional strength and service capabilities, creating what is known as the Ruijin model for the industry.
The office's organized approach to IP management has delivered significant economic and social advantages. Valuable patents have become benchmark projects, essential clinical technologies have been developed, and gaps in the treatment of major diseases have been filled, leading to better public health results.
In 2024, Ruijin Hospital ranked seventh nationally in invention patent applications and 26th in patent approvals, with PCT patents granted in the US, Europe, and other regions. Over the past three years, the office carried out 50 technology transfers, generating 600 million yuan ($84.49 million), including Shanghai's first hospital equity-based and self-implemented tech transfer projects. These achievements include several pioneering cases at the city level.
