The 22nd Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum, with the theme "Intellectual Property and Artificial Intelligence", gathered experts from international organizations, governments and academia to explore how AI and IP can work together to promote innovation and sustainable development.

Co-hosted by the National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the forum has grown since 2003 into an important platform for global dialogue on IP cooperation.

CNIPA introduced new guidelines clarifying that AI-generated inventions are patentable when human creativity is involved. They also introduced AI tools to assist with patent examination, including features for translation, image recognition and legal analysis.

WIPO reported advancements in utilizing AI to improve global IP management. More than 75 percent of their translation tasks are now managed by large models, and AI-driven image search and classification systems are enhancing the Madrid international trademarks registration process.

Participants acknowledged that AI brings both opportunities and challenges for IP protection. Experts emphasized the need for increased international cooperation and harmonized rules, highlighting China's experience as a valuable source of insight for developing equitable and inclusive global governance.
