To strengthen Shanghai's position as an intellectual property (IP) hub, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government recently announced the winners of the 5th Shanghai Intellectual Property Innovation Awards.

The Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), received recognition for excellence in IP creation.

SIMIT, one of China's top multidisciplinary research institutes, has earned 48 national awards and 351 awards at ministerial or provincial levels. Its breakthrough innovations include ductile iron casting, high-fluoride ore smelting, the development of the "Type-A separation membrane" for the Two Bombs, One Satellite project, and China's first high-speed bipolar integrated circuit.

SIMIT's Achievement Transformation Office has developed an integrated IP framework centered on semiconductor materials, intelligent sensors, and microsystems. This system connects high-value patents, strategic IP planning, and commercialization efforts to convert scientific innovations into competitive industrial advantages.

The office oversees 1,684 valid invention patents, 141 PCT international authorizations, 66 standards, 72 software copyrights, and 49 integrated circuit layout designs. It has introduced reforms that enable researchers to own and commercialize their innovations, enhancing the vitality and value of intellectual property.

SIMIT's innovations have received several National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Numerous patents have been successfully commercialized, contributing to the main-board listings of two companies and demonstrating how strong intellectual property development fosters scientific advancement and sustainable development.
