Trademark administrative protection is a crucial component of comprehensive intellectual property or IP protection, according to Rui Wenbiao, director-general of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, or SIPA.
He made the remarks recently at the 2025 China Trademark Annual Meeting during the 15th China International Trademark & Brand Festival, which drew attention to the vital role of trademark protection in the evolving global market.
The event was attended by representatives of intellectual property management departments from across China and other countries. It served as a platform for exchanging insights and fostering international cooperation in trademark protection.
In his address, Rui highlighted Shanghai's dual approach to enhancing trademark administrative protection through "strengthening institutional construction and optimizing mechanisms" — and "fortifying protection and empowering services".
He discussed the city's recent accomplishments and strategic initiatives in trademark protection, made in order to support its high-quality economic development.
"The Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration is committed to implementing the latest directives from both central and local authorities, guided by the vision of building a strong intellectual property powerhouse," Rui added.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by emerging technologies and business models, noting that trademark protection must adapt to these new demands.
Looking ahead, he outlined Shanghai's focus on being in line with national strategic priorities and responding to market innovation needs.
This included benchmarking against international best practice and learning from other regions to enhance the trademark protection system.
