The 2025 WIPO Global Services Utilization Training Workshop was held on May 8 in Shanghai, drawing over 100 participants from Shanghai-based enterprises and IP service agencies.
Organized by the Shanghai IP Administration and the WIPO China Office under the guidance of the China National IP Administration, the training session was designed to help businesses use the World IP Organization (WIPO)'s international treaties to aid in IP registration and protection.
The session focused on global trends in IP development and new tech issues, aiming to broaden participants' perspectives via a practical and interactive approach.
Yu Chen, deputy director-general of the Shanghai IP Administration, said that Shanghai is encouraging local market participants to utilize WIPO's service systems and engage in international cooperation, leveraging IP to stimulate innovation and promote openness.
Lyu Guoqiang, head of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Shanghai Service, stressed the importance of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) services within WIPO's global framework.
He said that these services are essential for businesses looking to protect their IP rights. Given the complexities and high costs associated with international disputes, WIPO promotes arbitration and mediation as effective alternatives to litigation. The Shanghai Service aims to provide efficient services for resolving such disputes.
Lyu also gave a presentation on WIPO's dispute resolution services, focusing on the scope and characteristics of international disputes, as well as related arbitration and mediation processes.
Representatives of the China National IP Administration's Patent Office provided insights into the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs and explained strategies for Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications.
A representative from the Pudong New Area IP Administration reaffirmed the district's commitment to optimizing its innovation ecosystem and supporting enterprises in expanding globally. Since 2016, the Pudong New Area IP Administration has hosted the workshop 10 times, training over 1,000 participants.
