A Shanghai innovation has been recognized among China's top 10 invention patent cases in Belt and Road Initiative partner economies, underscoring how advanced battery materials are supporting the global expansion of Chinese new energy vehicles.
The China National Intellectual Property Administration announced the selection, highlighting 10 exemplary cases from across the country that demonstrate successful patent strategies as Chinese innovators expand abroad across Belt and Road countries and regions.
The Shanghai case features Shanghai Energy New Materials Technology Co Ltd, whose global patent portfolio for lithium-ion battery separator technology was recognized for strengthening intellectual property protection while enabling broader overseas market access.
According to the case summary, the company has focused on wet-process separators, building a high-value patent portfolio centered on wide-temperature, low-shrinkage membranes, with related patents granted in 14 Belt and Road partner countries.
These patented products achieved sales of 6.06 billion yuan ($860 million) in 2023, while a manufacturing base established and put into operation in Hungary has promoted China-Hungary industrial chain coordination and clean energy technology cooperation.
The selected cases showcase practical approaches to innovation-driven global expansion, contributing to technological progress and industrial development in partner economies and offering experience that can be replicated by other Chinese enterprises.
In recent years, the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration has strengthened support for PCT applications, overseas patent portfolios and high-value patent cultivation, with high-value invention patents exceeding 63 per 10,000 people and PCT filings increasing by over 10 percent annually.
