A top official at the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration or SIPA recently outlined Shanghai's approach to IP governance at the main forum of the 14th China Intellectual Property Annual Conference, focusing on "IP in the digital age".

In his speech, Yu Chen, SIPA deputy director-general, outlined the city's comprehensive strategies and achievements in establishing itself as a global leader in IP protection.

He addressed four key areas: Enhancing the IP system, strengthening IP acquisition services, improving the protection framework and promoting the application and transformation of IP.

He emphasized that in today's rapidly advancing digital landscape, IP has become a crucial driver of technological innovation, industrial upgrading and economic development.

Yu highlighted Shanghai's ongoing efforts to refine its IP protection system, thereby supporting the city's development as an international hub for science and innovation.

Looking forward, Shanghai aims to uphold the principles of innovation, openness and cooperation — striving to deepen its all-encompassing IP protection in the digital era and to contribute its "Shanghai Solution" to global IP governance.

This year's conference featured one main forum and 12 sub-forums, with over 8,000 participants, including leaders from the WIPO China Office, IP management officials from across China, as well as IP service providers.

Representatives from government agencies, academia, industry and international organizations gave speeches.
