The World Intellectual Property Organization 2025 China Summer School opened in Shanghai on June 30 at the East China University of Political Science and Law, or ECUPL.
This year's WIPO program — which will explore the latest trends and hot issues of intellectual property, or IP — has attracted 141 participants from 21 countries, including 113 Chinese and 28 international students, the highest number to date.
The curriculum includes expert-led sessions on AI governance, international IP dispute resolution and combines classroom learning with practical activities to offer a comprehensive understanding of global IP dynamics.
Attendees at the opening ceremony included Yu Chen, deputy director-general of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration or SIPA, Luo Peixin, vice-president of ECUPL and Deng Yuhua, advisor at the WIPO China Office.
SIPA's Yu highlighted the strategic importance of talent for Shanghai, noting that cultivating IP professionals was key to the city's development. The summer school, a collaboration between Shanghai and WIPO, marks a significant step in enhancing IP talent training.
ECUPL's Luo emphasized the university's role as a major IP education hub in China, with rich academic resources and a commitment to international education. The summer school aims to cultivate high-level, interdisciplinary IP professionals through a diverse curriculum and an international faculty.
WIPO's Deng addressed the challenges posed by digital technologies like AI, stressing the importance of bridging gaps between developed and developing countries in accessing knowledge and technology. WIPO's efforts in policy coordination and capacity building are seen as being crucial for fostering global cooperation.
