Shanghai is set to enhance its role as a hub for international intellectual property (IP) protection by deepening innovation, reform, and high-level international cooperation in the IP sector this year, as revealed at a Shanghai IP Administration briefing on March 31.

Yu Chen, spokesperson and deputy director-general of the administration, shared data on Shanghai's 2024 IP activities and outlined plans for 2025 at the briefing.

In 2024, Shanghai saw 6,822 PCT international patent applications, up 10.3 percent year-on-year. The Patent Cooperation Treaty, or PCT, is one of the most important international treaties in the IP field.

For the fourth year running, Shanghai earned an excellent rating in the national IP protection assessment, while the Shanghai-Suzhou cluster ranked fifth globally in the Technology Cluster category of the World IP Organization's 2024 Global Innovation Index Report.

The briefing also provided interpretations of the city's business-friendly IP policies, like the Shanghai IP Special Fund Management Measures.

Officials introduced initiatives such as a pilot program for the IP registration of data products, protection of IP in the internet sector, development of trademark and geographical indication brands, patent pre-examination, and registration of innovative entities.

They also addressed questions from media representatives about data product IP transformation and IP protection on e-commerce platforms.
