At the recent Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2024 – the annual summit which brings together government leaders, senior officials and business executives – a top official in the government of East China's Shanghai espoused the cause of green growth.

In a keynote speech Wang Ping, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government, highlighted the central role of intellectual property or IP in driving the city's green development initiatives.

The prestigious event took place in Boao, in South China's Hainan province, on March 28.

Wang's speech, delivered at a high-level roundtable on IP's contribution to sustainable development, underscored Shanghai's strategic efforts to embed IP in its broader economic and social green transformation.

He said Shanghai was on an unwavering course towards a green and low-carbon future, fostering new engines of green growth.

The event, themed on "Asia and the World: Common Challenges, Shared Responsibilities", was co-hosted by the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization and the Boao Forum for Asia.

It brought together more than 100 delegates from various national IP offices, international organizations, the business sector and academia – reflecting a collective determination to harness IP for sustainable development.
