Some 35 Chinese companies – including Belle Footwear (Shanghai) and Shanghai Yitiao Network Technology – were fined in East China's Shanghai in an intellectual property or IP case for illegally using Olympic logos during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and 2022 Winter Olympics.

The companies were found to have used Olympic logos, including "Olympic" and "Winter Olympics", in their marketing without permission from the Olympic rights holder.

It was determined that this unauthorized use of Olympic symbols for commercial purposes violated the "Regulations on the Protection of Olympic Symbols". Such behavior was defined as "using Olympic symbols for commercial purposes with the purpose of profit in advertising, commercial exhibitions, business performances and other commercial activities", which constitutes an infringement of the exclusive rights of the Olympic symbol.

The companies were fined between 5,000 yuan ($697) and 40,000 yuan. The penalties were based on the nature, circumstances, subjective intention, harmful consequences and rectification situation of the companies involved.

The Chinese government's enforcement action is said to send a clear message that intellectual property rights, including Olympic logos, must be respected and protected in the country.
