In 2022, the Shanghai Intellectual Property Innovation Awards was upgraded to the municipal level.

The Shanghai IP Innovation Awards includes the WIPO-SMPG Shanghai IP Innovation Awards (Creation, Protection and Application) and the SMPG Shanghai IP Innovation Awards (first, second and third prizes for patents).

The WIPO-SMPG Shanghai IP Innovation Awards (Creation, Protection and Utilization) – organized by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the World Intellectual Property Organization – are designed to recognize enterprises and public institutions that have made outstanding achievements in high-quality creation, high-level protection and the efficient application of IP.

Sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the SMPG Shanghai IP Innovation Awards (first, second and third prizes for patents) are designed to recognize outstanding patent projects and encourage patentees and inventors (designers) who have made outstanding contributions to the economy and society.

The organizer of the awards is Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration. The cycle of Shanghai IP Innovation Awards is three years and the number of commendations is no more than three for each of the WIPO-SMPG Shanghai IP Innovation Awards (Creation, Protection and Utilization). There are 45 SMPG Shanghai IP Innovation Awards (first, second and third prizes for patents) – a total of five first, 15 second and 25 third prizes, respectively.
