The World Intellectual Property Organization, or WIPO, and Tongji University in East China's Shanghai city signed a new agreement on July 14 for the second phase of the WIPO-Tongji Master's Degree Program in Intellectual Property.

Shanghai Vice Mayor Chen Qun, International Cooperation of China National Intellectual Property Administration Deputy Director General Liu Jian, and Tongji University President Chen Jie, attended the signing ceremony. WIPO Academic Executive Director Sherif Saadallah participated via video link.

Chen said that Shanghai attached great importance to IP development and saw IP as a strategic pillar to enhance the city's competitiveness.

The WIPO-Tongji master's degree program in IP – an outcome of increased exchanges and cooperation between WIPO and Shanghai – is believed to have played a role in boosting the numbers of versatile IP practitioners in the region who have an international perspective.

Chen urged the Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property of Tongji University to take the signing as an opportunity to further deepen exchanges and collaboration with WIPO.

Chen said the college should make continued and meticulous efforts in IP innovation and practice, as well as explore new paths and score new achievements in cultivating top-tier IP talent and building a world-class think tank.

Liu congratulated students of the WIPO-Tongji program and the Chinese Government "Belt and Road" Master's Program in Intellectual Property who had completed their studies.

He expressed his high hopes the students would become friendly envoys for exchanges between China and other countries, while being capable in their professional field.

Saadallah said that in the past five years since WIPO and Tongji University had launched the joint training program, 127 students from 22 countries had benefited from it.

He believed that the new cooperation would promote the development of IP throughout the world.

In November 2016, WIPO and Tongji University signed a memorandum of understanding on the joint training of master's degrees in intellectual property – the seventh high-level IP talent training program established by WIPO in the world and the first in China – regarded as an important initiative of WIPO and Shanghai to create a highland for international IP talent.
