Shanghai holds briefing on IP development

The Briefing on Intellectual Property Development in Shanghai was held in the city in East China on June 28. The English portal of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration, or SIPA, was launched concurrently.

A total of 34 representatives of consular agencies, including eight consuls general, from 27 countries attended the briefing.

Rui Wenbiao, director general of SIPA, discussed the latest IP developments in Shanghai. He said that in 2020, Shanghai optimized its system to improve IP protection, enhanced its service system to boost the quality and efficiency of IP development, and strengthened its support system to improve the environment for IP development.

This year, Shanghai will further enhance its core function as an international beacon of IP protection, provide strong support for Shanghai's further opening-up, and create a better IP environment for all types of enterprises, including foreign enterprises, to develop in Shanghai, Rui added.

Lv Guoqiang, senior counselor of the WIPO Office in China, introduced the World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and Mediation Shanghai Service (hereinafter referred as WIPO Shanghai Service) during the briefing.

The WIPO Shanghai Service, established in the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone in 2019, arbitrates and mediates foreign-related IP dispute cases in China. As of June this year, the WIPO Shanghai Service had accepted 27 cases entrusted by Shanghai courts and concluded 12 cases, according to Lv.

Members of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Joint Conference, including SIPA, answered questions from officials of foreign consulates general in Shanghai, foreign chambers of commerce, and foreign-funded enterprises at the briefing.
